The Resting Room

"Treating each other and ourselves with care isn't a luxury, but an absolute necessity if we're going to thrive. Resting isn't an afterthought, but a basic part of being human."

Tricia Hersey, Rest is Resistance: A Manifesto

In July 2024 I invited people to join me in resting at the Create@#8 art space in Shepton Mallet, Somerset. This was an invitation to spend some time doing nothing.

From July 1st to 5th, I was the Artist in Residence at Create@#8. During this period, I developed a performance based artwork titled 'The Resting Room', which delved into the essential need for rest as an antidote to Capitalism and a society that equates hyper-productivity with self-worth. This project built on my 'Rest As Protest' project, developed during my DYCP Arts Council funding period in 2022-2023, inspired by my personal experiences of Burnout and Chronic Fatigue.

EVENT

From July 1st to 5th, I observed a vow of silence and spent time resting in the space, either alone or with other invited artists, while enjoying a cup Somerset Lavender tea.

On Sunday, July 7th, 2-4pm, I opened the space to the public for a Public Resting event, inviting members of the community to take time to slow down and rest.
